Montgomery Regional Hospital to Host First Annual Camp MRH

Montgomery Regional Hospital, with the support of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association (VHHA), will be hosting 12 students from local middle schools this summer for its first annual Camp MRH.  The camp will be held from August 10-August 14 and will give the students the opportunity to see various aspects of healthcare careers up close and in a way they would never be able to otherwise.
 
“Camp MRH will give students who are interested in a career as a health professional the chance to see what it would be like in the actual environment,” said Diane Gully, R.N.-BC, Coordinator of Community Health Education.  “Not only will they learn more about the jobs they are already familiar with, such as nurses and doctors, but they will learn about some of the medical field positions such as pharmacy technicians and ultrasonographers, that they might never have heard of before.”
 
The weeklong camp will feature various activities each day, including “An Inside View of You” with ultrasound, a laparoscopic activity in surgical services, an opportunity to compound their own toothpaste and learn about compounding pharmacy, and a trip to the Radford University Nursing Simulation Lab.
 
“This is a wonderful opportunity for young people who are interested in science and health care to get a ‘first hand look’ at careers in the medical field,” said Scott Hill, CEO, Montgomery Regional.  “They will be exposed to a number of areas within our industry and we are hopeful that this will help shape their career choices as they plan for the future.  We know they will be surprised by the many opportunities that exist for a challenging career in health care.”

Planning for the event began in February, and involves more than 14 hospital departments working together, along with outside agencies such as the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and Radford University.
